When P-type semiconductor and N-type semiconductor are closely combined, a special interface, namely PN junction, is formed between them.

2. Carrier injection: When a forward voltage is applied to both ends of the LED, holes in P-type semiconductor and electrons in N-type semiconductor are pushed to the PN junction. Near the PN junction, electrons and holes meet and recombine.

3. Energy release and luminescence: When electrons and holes recombine, they release a certain amount of energy. This energy is released in the form of photons, that is, light is generated. The wavelength (color) of the light emitted by the LED depends on the band gap width of the semiconductor material in the PN junction. Different semiconductor materials have different band gap widths, so they can emit light of different colors.

4. Light propagation and output: The light emitted by the LED will propagate inside the semiconductor material and eventually emit from the surface of the LED.
